We are using 50 for an example only. You can choose your own number but make sure it does not conflict with the quick key of another Favorite or you will get an error message. (Quick Key in Use. Select Another)

To turn the Favorite OFF – push 5 then 0 then E.Yes. (Or the allocated number you created)

Repeat the process to turn it back on.

This is a very basic set up for quickly getting on the GRN. There are several options that have been skipped over, including naming the Favorite and Site.

You can modify the settings in the menu to change the system and site names by reading the instruction manual.
The Scanner should now be saying ID Searching on the screen.

If in an active area – you should hear voice activity within a few seconds to minutes. If you see random numbers on the screen but no voice – this is an encrypted Talk Group.
If operating correctly you will see a NAC Code flashing above the Control Channel to the bottom right of the screen.

A good strong signal will be represented by a small signal meter at the top of the screen.

If you are receiving a good signal the indicator should show around 5 bars of signal strength.

If you feel the signal is weak – check your surroundings, step outside – move to a different area away from steel structures like a shed, or other areas that may present strong electrical interference. Try using a different or external antenna or move to higher ground.

While most areas are well covered – you could also be in a fringe area where there is a weak signal.

Can’t hear anything but signal is strong?

Unlike a normal AM/FM radio – Government Radio networks don’t broadcast 24/7 so you may have to be patient until there is some activity.

Also be aware that in some areas there may be limited activity as not all radio transmissions are sent through all sites. What you can hear from one site – may not be heard from another just 20kms up the road, even with excellent reception to that site.

If you cannot see anything – you may have entered the wrong control channels for your area or not in a reception area at all.
If there are no signal bars the scanner – this generally means, it is not receiving a signal.

Check your settings again and re-trace your steps.
